AS THE US ARMY ENTERED WORLD WAR II, THE TRANSPORTATION CORPS WAS CREATED AS A TEMPORARY BRANCH OF THE ARMY IN 1942 TO MANAGE ALL MODES OF TRANSPORTATION; ALTHOUGH ONLY RAILROADS, SHIP AND PORT UNITS BELONGED TO THE CORPS.   MANY OF THE ASSAULT LANDING CRAFT BELONGED TO THE ENGINEERS AND THE TRUCKS BELONGED TO THE QUARTERMASTER CORPS.  THE SOLDIERS OF THESE UNITS MADE SACRIFICES IN TERMS OF HUMAN LIVES IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT THE FRONT LINE SOLDIERS HAD WHAT THEY NEEDED TO WIN THE BATTLES.   IT WAS TRUCKS THAT DELIVERED THE PARATROOPERS OF THE 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION TO BASTOGNE, AND MANY BECAME TRAPPED IN THAT CITY AND HAD TO FIGHT AS INFANTRY.        IT WAS TRUCKS IN THE RED BALL EXPRESS THAT ALSO SUPPORTED THE TROOPS IN THE MARCH TO GERMANY. AFTER WORLD WAR II, PRESIDENT HARRY TRUMAN MADE THE TRANSPORTATION CORPS A PERMANENT BRANCH OF THE ARMY. THE QUARTERMASTER CORPS TURNED OVER ITS TRUCKS IN TIME FOR THE KOREAN WAR.  HISTORY HAS OFTEN OVERLOOKED THE SACRIFICES OF THE TRANSPORTATION CORPS IN FAVOR OF THE FRONT LINE COMBAT UNITS.  IT WAS ARMY TRUCK BATTALIONS THAT RESCUED THE 1ST MARINE REGIMENT FROM THE CHOSIN RESERVOIR. IT WAS TRUCKS THAT MADE REPEATED TRIPS TO DRIVE THE 2ND INFANTRY DIVISION THROUGH THE GAUNTLET OF CHINESE AMBUSHES. DURING THE VIETNAM WAR, TRANSPORTATION CORPS SOLDIERS WERE AGAIN CALLED UPON TO MAKE SACRIFICES.  WITHOUT ANY FRONT LINES, TRANSPORTERS WERE PUT IN HARM'S WAY EVERY DAY.   BY THEN, ALL LANDING CRAFT BELONGED TO THE TRANSPORTATION CORPS AND THE MARINERS OF THE 1097TH  EARNED MORE VALOR MEDALS THAN ANY OTHER BOAT UNIT IN THE ARMY, WHILE THEY SUPPORTED THE 9TH INFANTRY DIVISION IN THE MEKONG DELTA.  TRUCK DRIVERS TOOK A HEAVY TOLL IN LIVES TO HAUL CARGO OVER THE HEAVILY AMBUSHED ROADS OF VIETNAM, GIVING BIRTH TO THE GUN TRUCK.  DURING THAT WAR, TWO TC SOLDIERS EARNED OUR NATION’S HIGHEST MEDAL FOR VALOR, THE MEDAL OF HONOR. TRANSPORTERS HAVE SERVED IN MILITARY CONFLICTS INCLUDING GRENADA, PANAMA, SAUDI ARABIA, SOMALIA, AFGHANISTAN, KUWAIT AND IRAQ. THEY LOADED PLANES, SHIPS AND MOVED CARGO BY TRUCKS AND WATERCRAFT. TRANSPORTERS SUPPORTED THE COMBAT UNITS IN CONTINGENCIES IN GRENADA AND PANAMA.  DURING OPERATION DESERT SHIELD AND DESERT STORM, THE FIRST AMERICANS KILLED AND CAPTURED WERE ARMY TRUCK DRIVERS.   TRANSPORTERS DELIVERED THE GOODS IN SOMALIA, BOSNIA, KOSOVO AND HAITI. TRANSPORTERS DRIVE INTO HARM'S WAY EVERY DAY TO SUSTAIN UNITS ENSURING THE FREEDOM OF THE IRAQI PEOPLE.  WITH THE SUPPLY LINE AS A PRIME TARGET BY THE INSURGENTS, TRUCK DRIVERS HAVE AGAIN BECOME FRONT LINE TROOPS AND PAY A HIGH PRICE IN THE STRUGGLE FOR PEACE. HERE'S A QUOTE FROM THE TRANSPORTATION CORPS CREED: "AT THE DAWN OF THE 21ST CENTURY, I WAS SUMMONED ONCE MORE; ACROSS THE OCEANS, THE DESERT SANDS, THE RIVERS TIGRIS AND EUPHRATES, IN THAT ANCIENT LAND.  A NARROW FRONT THIS TIME, UNLIKE I’D EVER SEEN; SOME 400 MILES WELL INTO IRAQ.  I AM TRANSPORTATION; I AM AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE FORCE THAT MOVES THE CURRENT AND FUTURE FORCE INTO THE COMING CENTURY." WE PRAY THAT GOD WATCHES OVER OUR BRAVE TRANSPORTERS AND ALL MEN AND WOMEN IN UNIFORM WHO ARE WORKING TO KEEP AMERICA SAFE - AND WE PRAY FOR THEIR FAMILIES.
